IELTS Writing Sample Essay with Band 6.0 Scoring and Feedback

The use of prison sentences as a punishment is seen as an increasingly ineffective method for reducing crime rates. There are several alternative measures that could be explored and adopted. One alternative is restitution, in which responsible parties pay for damages caused by their actions. This method could easily and effectively serve both parties involved and it can garantee an equal satisfactory for them, as well as bringing justice into consideration, leaving all people involved happy and willing to drop the case. Another alternative is community service, in which a debt to society is paid through public works like picking up trash from the side of the road. Mental health counseling or rehabilitation is another alternative, in which criminal offenders receive help in an attempt to reduce their desire to commit crimes. Probation is another alternative which allows defendants to get out of jail or prison but under certain rules and conditions. House arrest is similar to probation. Dividing a prison sentence is another alternative. Paying for freedom: Restitution vs. bail is another alternative. Capital punishment, corporal punishment and electronic monitoring are also alternatives to imprisonment but are not promoted by modern prison reform movements for decarceration due to them being carceral in nature. In my opinion, while prison sentences may still be necessary in some cases, there are many alternatives that could be explored and adopted. These alternatives could be more effective at reducing crime rates and disbehavioring while also being more humane and cost-effective than traditional prison sentences.

Coherence And Cohesion6.0

The essay presents multiple alternative measures to imprisonment, but lacks clear organization and logical progression of ideas. The transitions between ideas are abrupt, and the essay does not consistently use cohesive devices to ensure coherence throughout the text.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid listing alternatives without explaining them in detail or showing how they relate to the main argument.
  • Use cohesive devices such as linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore,' 'in addition,' 'however') to connect ideas and paragraphs smoothly.
  • Ensure each paragraph starts with a clear topic sentence that outlines the main idea, followed by supporting details and examples.
  • Organize the essay into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific alternative measure to imprisonment, to improve the logical flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource6.0

The essay demonstrates a reasonable range of vocabulary with attempts to use less common lexical items related to the topic of crime and punishment. However, there are several instances of inappropriate word choices and spelling errors that affect clarity and precision.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid repetition by finding synonyms or rephrasing sentences to maintain reader engagement and demonstrate a broader lexical resource.
  • Ensure accurate spelling of words such as 'guarantee' and 'dissatisfying' to improve clarity and professionalism.
  • Expand the range of vocabulary by incorporating more varied and precise terms related to crime reduction strategies, such as 'rehabilitative measures' instead of 'mental health counseling or rehabilitation.'
  • Use more specific adjectives and adverbs to describe the effectiveness and nature of alternative measures, such as 'cost-efficient' instead of 'cost-effective' if referring to financial benefits specifically.

Grammatical Range6.0

The essay demonstrates a reasonable range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and various clause types. However, there are errors that affect clarity and precision, such as incorrect verb forms, missing articles, and spelling errors.

Recommendations:

  • Review and correct spelling errors, such as 'garantee' to 'guarantee'.
  • Ensure subject-verb agreement, especially in complex sentences, to maintain grammatical accuracy.
  • Use articles ('a', 'an', 'the') correctly to enhance sentence clarity and specificity.
  • Vary sentence structures more consistently to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.

Task Achievement5.0

The essay addresses the task prompt by discussing the ineffectiveness of prison sentences and suggesting alternative measures to reduce crime rates. However, it lacks a clear stance on the extent of agreement or disagreement with the prompt, and the exploration of alternatives is not sufficiently developed.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid listing alternatives without explaining their potential effectiveness in detail.
  • Develop each alternative measure more thoroughly, providing examples and explaining how they might effectively reduce crime rates.
  • Ensure that the conclusion summarizes your position and the main points discussed to reinforce your opinion.
  • Clearly state your position on the extent to which you agree or disagree with the prompt in the introduction.
